The Greek word for goodness, agathosune, signifies integrity of character and conduct. It emphasizes goodness for the benefit of others, rather than being virtuous solely for selfish intent or self-preservation.
Goodness cannot be manufactured by ourselves alone; James 1:17 states that every good and perfect gift comes from the Father of lights above. This includes a life characterised by goodness. By allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us, we receive the fruit of goodness. As others witness our good works, they will praise our heavenly Father (Matthew 5:16)
