The King is in the field
Two months ago, although Miinella’s headquarters remain in Durban, my family and I made the move to Langebaan on the West Coast. It’s been a season of fresh starts for us, and this month in particular has felt like such a gift. It’s flower season here — my very first time experiencing the famous West Coast wildflowers — and wherever I drive, whether just outside our home or along the open roads, the landscape is bursting with colour.
What amazes me most is that these flowers seem to exist for no other reason than to bring delight. Besides feeding a few bees, their main purpose appears to be beauty — and I love that God would create something so extravagant, simply for us to enjoy.
This week, a client reminded me that we are in the month of Elul on the Hebrew calendar — a season known as “when the King is in the field.”
In Jewish tradition, this means the King has left His palace and stepped into the open fields, drawing near and inviting His people closer. It’s a picture of intimacy and accessibility: the God of the universe walking among the ordinary places of our lives, making Himself near to us.
As I look out at these wildflower fields, I can almost see Him there — the King in the field — smiling and saying, “I’m here. Come as you are.” There’s something deeply moving about that: in a world that can often feel dry or ordinary, His presence brings life, beauty, and colour. And when He draws near, we flourish.
